Too many families across Alabama struggle to access timely, affordable health care. Our state continues to rank near the bottom nationally in maternal and infant health outcomes, and significant gaps remain in access to mental health services, particularly in rural communities. Addressing these challenges requires practical solutions: strengthening local provider networks, expanding access to prenatal and preventative care, improving rural health infrastructure, and increasing availability of mental health resources. Healthy families are the foundation of a strong state, and we must ensure that quality care is within reach for every Alabamian. We must do better, and together, we can.
Families across Alabama are struggling under rising electricity bills, and too many feel they have little recourse when rates continue to climb. As the state’s primary electric utility, Alabama Power operates with limited competition, and rate decisions often lack the transparency consumers deserve. We must strengthen regulatory oversight to ensure rate increases are justified and clearly explained, increase public accountability in utility proceedings, and explore policies that encourage innovation, efficiency, and fair competition where possible. Alabamians should not feel powerless when it comes to powering their homes. Affordable, reliable energy is essential. Our utility system must work for the people who fund it.
Across the state, business owners and entrepreneurs face excessive hurdles for state certifications, occupational licensing, as well as restrictive local zoning rules. All of which work to prevent qualified Alabamians from starting businesses and pursuing the American Dream. These barriers drive up costs, create delays, and stifle innovation right here in District 50. With common sense reforms and support from our communities, we can reduce unnecessary regulations, streamline processes, and lower hurdles to entry, helping our local businesses thrive, create jobs, and strengthen our neighborhoods. When businesses succeed, Alabama succeeds. Let's work together to make it easier for hardworking people to build a better future.
Independents and long-standing non-voters deserve to be heard. When up to half of eligible citizens choose not to participate, that absence is a signal that our system must do better. I will work to reduce structural barriers to engagement, including reexamining straight-ticket voting and moving toward open, ranked-choice primaries where every candidate competes on equal footing. Our elections should reflect genuine choice and real accountability. In a representative government, authority flows from the People. Not from entrenched political engines. Let's do better so that all of our voices are heard.
Alabama maintains strict oversight of alcohol sales, yet continues to overregulate and criminalize cannabis in ways that cost taxpayers millions in enforcement while forfeiting an estimated $134 million annually in potential tax revenue. At the same time, our prison system faces documented overcrowding, understaffing, and unacceptable conditions that raise serious concerns about accountability and constitutional rights. Continuing down this path is neither fiscally responsible nor just. We can pursue policies that protect public safety, respect individual liberty, and restore integrity to our correctional system. Alabama can, and must, do better.
Strong communities are built on strong families and families come in many forms. Every family has the fundamental right to worship freely, to educate their children according to their convictions, and to raise them with the values they believe in. The role of government is not to dictate life inside the home, but to protect the rights and liberties that allow families to thrive. When we safeguard individual freedom and uphold equal protection under the law, we preserve both family integrity and personal responsibility. A free society trusts its people and that begins by respecting their homes. Let's protect our families, and our communities, together.
